  • Ataxia is one of the classic signs of cerebellar disease. It appears in the trunk, extremities, head, mouth, and tongue (speech). Multi-joint and patterns of movement are more affected than single-joint movements. Ataxia is most often associated with disturbances of gait (walk).
  • Ataxic gait is one in which there is uneven step length, width is irregular, rhythm is absent, and the feet are often lifted too high. The individual cannot walk in a straight line without lurching. Arm swing is typically absent.
