Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the Central Nervous System (brain, spinal cord and optic nerves). The nerve fibers of the CNS, for protection, are covered by a fatty tissue called myelin that helps the conduction of electrical impulses. With MS the immune system attacks that protective sheath (myelin) causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

With multiple sclerosis the myelin or nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, which affects the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses.

The symptoms depends on the person and the magnitude of the injury, however among the most common are:

  • Tingling, pain, or unusual tenderness in different parts of the body

  • Weakness, tremors, or lack of coordination

  • Visual disturbances

  • Sudden loss of bladder control

  • Numbness of one or more limbs that typically occurs on one side of the body at a time

  • Blurred vision or partial or complete loss of vision usually in one eye at a time

Risk Factors

The exact cause of MS is unknown. It is considered an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues. However, there are some factors that can increase the risk of suffering from MS, some of them are:

  • Age: Although MS can occur at any age, its onset is usually around 20 and 40 years of age

  • Sex: Women are two to three times more likely than men to have MS

  • Family history: it often happens that if there is a history of MS in the family tree, the risk increases considerably

Treatment

MS is usually treated with Physical Therapy through strengthening and stretching exercises that make everyday tasks easier. Medication are also recommended whether they are muscle relaxants, to reduce fatigue or medications for pain, insomnia, sexual dysfunction or other discomforts that may appear.
