Stroke
- The term stroke (a.k.a. cerebrovascular accident/CVA) refers to a neurological syndrome characterized by either a rapid or gradual non-convulsive onset of neurologic deficits that last 24 hours or longer. In every stroke syndrome, specific areas of the brain are deprived from an adequate supply of oxygen. If blood supply is impeded for an extended period of time then the involved tissues will die, causing permanent neurologic insult. Neurological deficits seen after a stroke depend on the location and extent of the lesion. The majority of stroke survivors experience a decrease in activity level and overall quality of life.
- A transient ischemic attack or TIA is an ischemic event lasting less than 24 hours with no apparent neurologic deficits.
