Pain is our body’s natural way of telling us that something is wrong. It is a sensory perception, which according to the WHO can be defined as an unpleasant sensitive and emotional experience associated with an injury or potential.

The licda. Natalia explains how the science of pain works in this video.

Pain is controlled by the nervous system. It is produced when an external stimulus activates the receptor cells that send a message from the spinal cord to the brain. These cells are capable of feeling heat, cold, pain, touch …

There are “bearable” pains that warn us of major ailments and others that are so acute that they can limit the normal development of activities of daily living.

That is why before making the decision to self-medicate, it is best to go to a specialist. It is better to understand the root cause that is causing problems in the body than to suffer more consequences for not treating them in time.

Classifictions:

  • According to the duration: there are acute pains characterized because they have cycles where they are perceived and where they are not. While the other category is chronic pain, these are sustained over time and of unlimited duration.

  • According to its pathogenesis: The first is neuropathic pain, this is produced by a direct stimulation of the central nervous system or lesions of the peripheral nerve pathways. The other type is psychogenic pain that is produced by the pisco-social environment in which the person develops.

  • According to location: characterized by being produced by the abnormal excitation of superficial or deep somatic nocioceptors, that is, the skin, muscles, bones, vessels …

Visceral pain is caused by abnormal excitation of visceral nocioceptors. It is continuous and deep because it can radiate in places far from the original cause, for example liver metastases or cancer.

  • According to intensity: Pain can be measured as mild, moderate or severe. It depends on how much it interferes with doing normal activities and how bearable it can be.

Our body is wise and learning to listen to it is essential. Everything we feel is important because it tells us that certain adjustments must be made. Our health must always come first, and the science of pain is intended to alert us to something that is not working properly.
