Bending down and lifting an object correctly

Objects are constantly dropped on the floor or something needs to be lifted and unconsciously the upper body is flexed. By doing this without analyzing the movement, we can increase the risk of suffering back pain; and the chances are even higher if you have suffered an injury in the past or if you experience wear, tear or loss of flexibility over time.

Recommendations to prevent lifting injuries

  • Spread the legs apart to give the body a wide base of support.

  • Stand as close as possible to the object to be lifted.

  • Bend at the knees, not at the waist or back.

  • Tighten your stomach muscles as you lift or lower the object.

  • Keep the object as close to the body as possible.

  • Lift objects slowly, using the muscles of the hips and knees.

  • When standing with the object, DO NOT lean forward.

  • DO NOT twist your back while bending over to reach, lift or carry an object.

  • Squat down as you unload the object, using your knee and hip muscles. Keep your back straight when squatting.

This video will visually help you to pick up objects correctly.

Following these recommendations will help you avoid injuries and back pain. If you do a bad movement when picking up or lifting an object from the floor and this causes you pain, remember that going to a specialist is the best solution to control such discomfort. The NeuroFT Clinic will help you with you on an individual basis.
