We are used to hear about contractures. However, we are rarely aware of what they are, how they work and what is the importance of treating them.

Contractures are much more common than we think. Our muscles can be constantly affected if we are not aware of taking care of our posture and the effort we make when doing sports or any other activity that requires it.

What is a contracture?

A contracture, as its name implies, is a continuous and involuntary contraction of the muscle (and its fibers) that causes tension in the part of the body in which it develops.

When it happens, it prevents the blood from reaching the muscle cells normally and toxins accumulate. This is why the muscles send signals to the brain that ultimately causes the pain.

However, if the pain persists it is recommended that you visit your therapist. Contractures are treated with muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, thermotherapy, massages and hydrotherapy mainly.

We care about the triggering cause of the contracture, to treat the root problem. If you suffer from these types of problems, do not hesitate to contact us.

Types

  • During exertion: These contractures happen when there is accumulation of metabolic waste within the muscle fiber when doing sudden movements, outside of the routine. Therefore before exercising it is important to warm up a little.

  • After the effort: In this case the contractures happen due to the stretching of the fiber and / or its excessive work doing the effort, which causes injuries and pain.

Main Causes

  • Sports: Overloading the muscles can result in contractures. In general, this is the main cause associated with contractures, however, any person, regardless of their daily routine, can suffer this problem.

  • Sedentary lifestyle: When you effort yourself out of the ordinary, you are more likely to suffer from contractures. It is important to stay active to train your muscles and prolong their elasticity and strength.

  • Dehydration: the lack of water and other components such as potassium or glucose, can cause irritation in the muscle and facilitate the appearance of contractures. Maintaining a balanced diet is essential to be healthy.

  • Aging: With age, our muscles lose elasticity and strength; Due to this, any effort can be excessive and develop a contracture. For this, it is essential to stay active, doing at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity including  stretching.

If you constantly suffer from these types of problems, it is recommended that you change your posture throughout the day, especially if you spend many hours sitting or standing. Also stretch for about 3 minutes, every two hours, drink water regularly and follow a balanced diet.
